Admission requirements

All students who finished the first-cycle Bologna study programmes may apply for admission to the Master’s Programme in Applied Statistics, regardless of their field of study in the first cycle. Candidates with foreign qualifications are also invited to apply, the equivalence of their entry qualifications shall be recognized following the general rules of University of Ljubljana.

This is the right study for you, if

  • you are keen of data presentation and analysis
  • you enjoy the variety of work that offers many new challenges
  • you want to be actively involved in multidisciplinary teams with professionals form various fields

Acquired knowledge

The main goal of the programme is to provide the students with knowledge of the basics of statistical theory, and to enable them to competently apply specific methods in a chosen area. The graduates should have the necessary statistical skills for immediate employment in industry or the public sector.

... and it's fair to say that I am, by now, sexually aroused by the collating of data. (Bono of U2, Ted Talk 2013)

The graduates of the programme will master the statistical way of thinking and will be able to independently perform all aspects of relevant statistical analysis in a given field, e.g., planning a research, collecting data, choosing relevant methods and interpreting results. With acquired knowledge and skills graduates will be able to disseminate their knowledge with new or alternative approaches as well as by drawing ideas from related problems. At their work graduates will apply advanced information or programme tools for data editing, analysis, and presentation.

Graduates will also have the required expertise to collaborate with experts from different scientific fields, help them in planning their studies, interpreting the results, and writing the reports or papers. They will be able to define the hypothesis, find the optimal analytical procedures for the given problem, they will know how to find the literature and critically evaluate the information.

Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write. (H. G. Wells)

The applied nature of the programme will enable the graduates to transfer their knowledge into practice and to understand the problems that may arise in such enterprise. International orientation of the programme will enable graduates to acquire inter cultural communication skills.

At the same time the programme will offer enough theoretical knowledge for students to be able to extend their competence to other areas of statistics. The gained knowledge and competences offer a perfect background for continuation of the studies at the Doctoral Programme in Statistics.

It is easy to lie with statistics. It is hard to tell the truth without it. (A. Dunkels)
